Tiny dose of plant flavonoids boosts rabbit health and meat quality

The flavonoids packed into colorful fruits, herbs, and tea leaves in your garden turn out to be potent enough that a pinch of them reshapes gut bacteria and liver function in a living animal, a reminder that the pigments you're growing aren't just pretty.
Researchers took a concentrated blend of plant flavonoids (the same class of protective compounds found in berries, citrus peels, and many herbs) and added tiny amounts to rabbit feed. At just over half a gram per kilogram of food, the rabbits grew better, digested nutrients more efficiently, had healthier gut bacteria, and showed lower liver stress markers. Too little or too much of the extract didn't work as well, showing that with plant compounds, dose really matters.
Key Findings
Rabbits fed 0.60 g/kg of plant flavonoid blend showed the best weight gain and feed conversion ratio (p < 0.001) compared to other doses.
The supplement linearly reduced harmful E. coli while increasing beneficial Lactobacillus bacteria in the gut, with optimal levels at 0.60 and 0.47 g/kg respectively.
Liver enzyme markers (AST, ALT, ALP) dropped significantly at an estimated breakpoint of 0.55 g/kg, alongside improved HDL cholesterol and meat redness.
