Cells have a cleanup crew called autophagy that usually breaks down and recycles worn-out parts. This study found that in a small mustard plant relative called Arabidopsis, that same cleanup crew is also used constructively, to carry a specific enzyme into a cellular storage compartment where it does its job breaking down sugar molecules. When scientists disabled this enzyme's delivery system, the plants still grew normally but produced fewer seeds, showing this delivery route matters for plant reproduction even though it doesn't look like typical autophagy.
