Scientists gene-edit a popular purple houseplant for the first time

The velvety purple 'Sunset Velvet' oxalis on windowsills everywhere could soon come in new colors and hardier forms, now that breeders finally have a way to edit its genes.

Oxalis vulcanicola 'Sunset Velvet' is a popular ornamental plant, but breeders had no way to tweak its genes because scientists couldn't get new DNA into its cells reliably. This team figured out the right recipe of timing, bacteria concentration, and chemical triggers to finally insert genes into the plant, then used CRISPR to switch off a pigment gene, turning the leaves ghostly white to prove the edit worked. It's a small first step, but it opens the door to breeding new colors, shapes, or tougher versions of this and other unusual ornamental plants.
