The alfalfa cover crop in a garden bed or farm field could someday double as a plastic-degrading partner, breaking down stray plastic film in the soil instead of letting it linger for decades.
Researchers turned plant biomass into tiny nanoparticles and paired them with alfalfa plants growing in soil contaminated with polyethylene plastic film. Under UV light the particles broke down over 16% of the plastic in less than a month, and when planted alongside alfalfa in soil they degraded over 11% of it in three months, all without the plastic breaking down harmfully passing up into the food chain. It's a plant-powered, closed-loop cleanup system that could work at the scale of a backyard or household.
Key Findings
Plant-based nanomaterials (PB-NMs) degraded 16.09% of polyethylene plastic in 28 days under UV-A light, outperforming two commercial carbon nanomaterials.
When combined with alfalfa in soil, PB-NMs degraded 11.35% of the plastic over 90 days.
No detectable trophic transfer of degradation byproducts occurred, and microbial analysis showed PB-NMs activated distinct plastic-degrading bacterial communities depending on placement and timing.
