Birch trees on old farmland absorb metals without stunting their growth

If you're converting an old field or pasture into a woodlot, this study suggests birch can tolerate soils with lingering fertilizer or pesticide-era metal residues without growing poorly, though the wood itself picks up more metal when the soil's chemistry favors it.

Scientists looked at birch trees planted on old farm fields 20 years ago and measured how metals like chromium, copper, iron, manganese, and zinc moved from the soil into the wood and bark. They found that soil chemistry, especially acidity and nutrient levels, mattered more than anything else for how much metal ended up in the tree, and that younger wood near the center of the trunk held more metal than older wood near the bark. Importantly, even trees growing in soil with higher metal levels grew just fine, which is good news for anyone hoping to turn old farmland into healthy new forest.
