The dark, thread-like fungi coating the roots of nearly every plant you've ever grown, from tomatoes to prairie grasses, might be quietly helping them handle drought and poor soil, so understanding them could change how you think about soil care and fertilizer use.

Almost every plant has fungi living inside its roots that scientists used to overlook because they don't form the neat partnerships that mycorrhizal fungi do. These 'dark septate endophytes' turn out to help plants pull in nutrients, tolerate drought and disease, and even help glue soil particles together.
