Ancient herbal formula boosts arthritis drug's bone protection in rats

The two plants behind this formula, Chinese privet and false daisy, are staples of traditional herb gardens grown for centuries specifically to strengthen bones and joints, and this study gives lab evidence for why that old practice might actually work.
Rheumatoid arthritis doesn't just hurt joints, it eats away at bone throughout the body, and the main drug doctors use doesn't do much to stop that. Researchers tested pairing that drug with Erzhi pill, an old Chinese herbal blend made from privet berries and false daisy, and found the combo did a much better job protecting bone in arthritic rats. They traced the effect to two plant compounds, salidroside and ferulic acid, which switch on a biological pathway that tells the body to build bone rather than break it down.
