Custom bacteria teams boost strawberries and fight fruit rot

If you grow strawberries in a raised bed or container, the microbes already living around the roots could be recruited to fight anthracnose rot and boost yields without extra chemicals.
Researchers dug into the strawberry root zone and found dozens of naturally occurring bacteria, then picked out the best performers: some that pump out plant growth hormones and nutrients, others that attack a fungus called anthracnose that rots strawberry fruit and stems. They mixed these into two custom bacterial teams, one for growing bigger, healthier plants and one for disease control, and both worked even in messy, real-world soil, not just sterile lab conditions.

From 90 isolated strains, researchers identified 14 phosphate-solubilizing, 13 siderophore-producing, 14 IAA-secreting, and 2 ACC deaminase-active bacteria with plant growth-promoting traits
A five-strain growth-promoting SynCom (SC1) increased shoot biomass and root length beyond the best single strain alone
A two-strain disease-suppressive SynCom (SC2) achieved over 50% control of Colletotrichum siamense (anthracnose) under sterile conditions and 76.4% average control efficacy across various non-sterile field soils
