Corydalis relatives grow across temperate gardens worldwide, and understanding which compounds make them medicinally potent could one day guide cultivation choices for herbalists and ethnobotanical gardeners.
A plant called Corydalis impatiens has been used in Tibetan medicine for centuries to treat liver problems, but scientists didn't have a full picture of the chemicals inside it. Using a powerful combination of high-speed chemical analysis and network-mapping software, researchers identified 74 distinct alkaloid compounds in the plant, 8 of which appear to be brand new to science. This work lays the groundwork for future studies into which specific compounds protect the liver and how they might be developed into treatments.
