Your hemp variety shapes its seed nutrition more than farming does

Seed Saving

Hemp seeds you might grow for food or fiber carry a nutritional fingerprint set by the variety, not just the crop, so choosing your cultivar is as consequential as choosing your soil.

Hemp seeds are packed with protein, fat, and sugars, but exactly how much of each depends heavily on which variety you plant. Scientists compared the molecular makeup of wild hemp and farmed hemp and found that farming has quietly switched off hundreds of proteins that wild plants still run. It's a window into how domestication reshapes a plant from the inside out, long before you ever harvest it.

Key Findings

1

Glutamic acid, arginine, and aspartic acid were the dominant amino acids across 21 hemp varieties, with linoleic acid as the primary fatty acid and fructose and sucrose as the leading sugars.

2

Proteomic analysis detected 240 differentially expressed proteins between wild and cultivated dual-type hemp, and 648 between wild and fiber-type hemp.

3

Most differentially expressed proteins were downregulated in cultivated varieties compared to wild counterparts, pointing to broad protein suppression as a hallmark of hemp domestication.

chevron_right Technical Summary

Researchers tested 21 hemp varieties and found that the specific variety grown shapes its nutritional makeup, with glutamic acid, linoleic acid, and fructose leading the pack. A protein comparison between wild and cultivated hemp revealed hundreds of differences, with domesticated varieties consistently showing lower protein activity than their wild relatives.
