Kiwifruit vines grown on a backyard pergola or a commercial trellis move through flowering in a narrow, easy-to-miss window — automated tools trained on datasets like this could one day send your phone an alert when your vines hit peak bloom and are ready for hand-pollination.

Knowing exactly when kiwifruit plants are budding, flowering, or setting fruit is hugely useful for growers, but walking through an orchard and checking by hand takes enormous time. This team photographed and filmed kiwifruit vines at every growth stage, carefully labeled each image, and pinned the videos to real GPS coordinates so a computer can learn to recognize the stages automatically. The result is a shared library other researchers and developers can use to build apps that watch orchards for them.

The dataset contains 1,665 annotated images covering phenological stages from bud break through fruit set, organized by plant structure, gender, and growth stage.

A custom 17-class growth-stage system was developed by adapting the standard BBCH scale — merging visually similar stages and removing categories that were too ambiguous to label reliably.

Georeferenced (GPS-tagged) videos with manual ground-truth maps were included specifically to validate automated counting algorithms at the spatial level, not just image recognition accuracy.
