Wild blueberries now ripen a week earlier than a century ago
A pressed blueberry sprig from 1901 and a phone snapshot from last summer count as the same kind of evidence, and stacked together they show the berries arriving earlier.
Researchers pulled 928 records of lowbush blueberry from herbarium sheets and iNaturalist photos, spanning 1901 to 2023 across eight ecoregions of northeastern North America. Warm springs and early summers pull every stage forward: bud, flower, green berry, ripening, leaf-out. Budding responds hardest to temperature, and the green-berry stage now shows up roughly seven days sooner than it did at the start of that record. If you forage, the window between green and blue has quietly slid.
The photo half of that dataset is being built right now. Fireweed logged 531 confirmed sightings in a single week, wild bergamot 1,045, common ragweed 1,592 as it hits peak pollen release. Blurry and timestamped, the kind of thing that looks like nothing until someone stacks a century of them.
Plants keep their own records too. A review this week on stress memory maps the chemical tags on DNA and the small RNA signals that log a drought or a heat wave, so when it returns the plant shuts its pores faster and gets photosynthesis running again sooner. Some of those notes ride into the seed and reach the next generation. Your mediocre phone photo of a bergamot patch is somebody's dataset a hundred years from now. Take it anyway.
