Worm-composted rabbit manure and food scraps supercharge vegetable yields
Feed worms a fifty-fifty mix of rabbit droppings and kitchen scraps, and you get compost that grows measurably bigger tomatoes. Not a vague soil-health promise: an actual recipe.
That blend landed a carbon-to-nitrogen ratio of 21, the sweet spot, with the busiest enzyme activity and the most varied community of tiny soil organisms of any mix tested. Tomatoes came in at 10.2 kg per square meter, lettuce at 4.5. The twist is that carrots wanted something else, thriving on compost weighted toward plant waste over manure. The worms don't make one universal fertilizer; the input dictates the output.
What you feed the pile keeps mattering across the week. A shrimp-shell compost, left to break down for four months, grew bacteria that throttled the fungi killing olive trees, with one Bacillus subtilis strain choking Verticillium growth by 81%. And a study on drought-stressed rosemary found that household and yard waste mixed with donkey manure protected plants best, while the manure-heavy composts grew bigger plants but seeded the soil with antibiotic-resistance genes. Balance beat brute nitrogen.
The through-line is cheering. Rabbit pellets and shrimp shells both become fertility. So do orange and banana peels, which one team spun into gels that swell to three times their weight and hold soil moisture for twelve days before breaking down. Waste we'd otherwise haul away, feeding the beds instead. Match the scrap to the crop, and the garbage does the gardening.
