Your hydroponic setup shapes which bacteria live in the water

PubMed · 2026-08-04

The type of soilless growing system you use changes which bacteria live in the nutrient water. Drip irrigation carried the most bacteria, but bok choy leaves stayed similarly clean across all five system types.

1

Drip irrigation had the highest aerobic bacteria counts in nutrient solution across both growing cycles, compared with deep water culture, Kratky, nutrient film technique, and ebb and flow.

2

Higher nutrient solution pH was associated with lower bacterial counts, while temperature had no significant effect on microbial concentrations.

3

Acidovorax was the only bacterial genus found in every sample, and Acidovorax, Legionella, and Caulobacter were identified as both core and hub taxa; bok choy leaf bacterial counts did not differ significantly by system type.
