Body inflammation worsens pesticide harm in vegetable farmers

OpenAlex · 2026-08-27

A study of vegetable farmers in Indonesia found that a natural inflammation marker called IL-6 makes pesticide exposure more damaging to metabolic health, worsening waist size, blood pressure, and risk of metabolic syndrome. The findings suggest that farmers with more inflammation in their bodies may be more vulnerable to the health effects of chronic pesticide exposure.

1

Case-control study of 134 male vegetable farmers in West Java (44 with metabolic syndrome, 90 controls) drawn from a 307-farmer screening

2

IL-6 significantly moderated the effect of acetylcholinesterase (pesticide exposure marker) on waist circumference, systolic BP, diastolic BP, and metabolic syndrome risk

3

Effects strengthened at high inflammation levels, e.g. B=0.0059, p=0.0008 for systolic blood pressure and B=-0.0009, p=0.0041 for metabolic syndrome
