Scientists used an advanced machine learning method to map how salty the soil is at different depths across farmland in northwestern China, where too much salt in the soil is killing crops. Their approach accurately predicted salinity patterns and pinpointed the most at-risk areas, helping farmers know exactly where to intervene.

The machine learning model predicted surface soil salinity with high accuracy (R² = 0.81), and was even more accurate in cross-validation testing (R² = 0.86 for the top 0–25 cm layer).

Vegetation health indicators (like greenness from satellite images) and landscape shape (slope and drainage) were the strongest predictors of where salt accumulates — low, flat, poorly drained areas had the highest salt levels.

Accuracy declined at greater depths (R² = 0.59 at 75–125 cm), highlighting that deeper soil salinity remains harder to map remotely and requires more targeted ground sampling.
