A single gene fine-tunes millet's flowering clock and grain output
Scientists discovered a gene called SGD1 in foxtail millet that acts like a quality-control tag, controlling when the plant flowers and how much grain it produces by degrading another key protein. This gives breeders a precise genetic target to fine-tune crop timing and yield for different climates.
