Genus
Patellifolia is a genus of flowering plants in the subfamily Betoideae of the family Amaranthaceae. These are mostly procumbent herbs occurring in the Western Mediterranean region and Macaronesia, with some isolated occurrences in North Africa and at the Horn of Africa. They are of interest as crop wild relatives of sugar beet.

Latest finding
Scientists traced the family tree of a tough wild beet and found it arose when a diploid wild relative doubled its genome, creating a new tetraploid plant packed with salt, frost, and disease resistance. That discovery gives sugar beet breeders a genetic roadmap to borrow those survival traits for future crops.
