Synergistic removal of morpholine fungicides and cadmium from agricultural water by a biochar-immobilized bacterial-duckweed system: Quantifying roles of biodegradation, adsorption, and phyto-uptake.

Cadmium and fungicide runoff from nearby farms can quietly contaminate the water used to irrigate your vegetable garden, and this breakthrough offers a low-cost, plant-based filter that could sit at the edge of a field and clean that water before it reaches your food.

Scientists built a living water filter by coating bamboo charcoal with two types of bacteria and floating duckweed on top. The bacteria break down harmful fungal sprays used in farming, the charcoal traps heavy metal pollution, and the duckweed absorbs whatever remains — all at the same time. Tested outdoors across three seasons, the system consistently cleaned more than 90% of the contamination from the water.

The biochar-bacteria composite removed 97.65% of flumorph, 94.23% of dimethomorph, and 82.68% of cadmium under optimized lab conditions.

Adding duckweed contributed an extra 15–28% contaminant removal and boosted overall cleanup synergy up to 3.27-fold compared to individual components alone.

An outdoor ecological filter bed maintained average removal rates of 94.96% (flumorph), 91.43% (dimethomorph), and 85.42% (cadmium) across three consecutive growing seasons.
