Researchers built a detailed family tree for a group of small flowering plants called Cistantheae that grow in deserts and high mountains across the Americas. They discovered that plants in this group repeatedly evolved between two lifestyles — short-lived annuals in hot dry places and long-lived perennials in cool wet ones — showing that this switch happened many times independently. Surprisingly, many species seem naturally equipped to handle both harsh desert conditions and frigid alpine environments, which could make them important plants to study as our climate changes.
