Researchers found 12 locations in the wheat genome that carry instructions for building these structures, and noticed that drought-tolerant wheat turns several of these genes up much higher than drought-sensitive wheat does. This suggests those genes are part of what makes some wheat plants tougher survivors in dry conditions.
