AI camera system reveals which cotton seeds beat salty soil
Crop Improvement
If you've ever watched seedlings struggle in salty or over-fertilized soil, this kind of automated tracking shows exactly which varieties bounce back fastest and which ones falter, right down to the root.
Scientists set up cameras to continuously photograph cotton seeds as they sprouted and grew, then trained a computer vision model to automatically measure root length and leaf area from those images, something that used to require tedious hand-measuring with a ruler. They tested four cotton varieties under six different levels of salty water and found that some varieties sprout better in salt early on, while others grow bigger leaves later, meaning no single variety is best at every stage. This kind of automated plant-measuring tool could help breeders and farmers quickly spot which seeds are toughest for salty or marginal soils.
Key Findings
The SDI-YOLO11-seg AI model achieved 96.1% precision for detecting plant parts and 93.7% for detailed shape masks, outperforming the baseline model by up to 6%
AI measurements closely matched manual measurements with ImageJ software, with R² values of 0.970 for root length and 0.993 for cotyledon (leaf) area
Among four Xinjiang cotton varieties tested under salt stress up to 250 mmol/L, Jinken 1565 showed the best salt tolerance during germination while Jinken 1775 excelled during seedling growth, and Tahe 2 was weakest at both stages
chevron_right Technical Summary
Researchers built an AI camera system that automatically tracks cotton seeds as they sprout and grow, measuring root length and leaf size thousands of times more precisely than a person with a ruler ever could. Using this tool, they identified specific cotton varieties that handle salty soil better at different growth stages, which could help farmers choose the right seeds for salt-affected land.

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae. The fiber is almost pure cellulose and may contain minor percentages of waxes, fats, pectins, and water. Under natural condi...
