Bamboo pegs could replace steel bolts in wood buildings
Sustainable Materials
If you've ever admired a bamboo trellis or fence in a garden for how fast the plant grows back, this research shows that same quick-growing grass could soon hold up the beams in sustainable buildings instead of steel hardware.
Researchers wanted to know if dowels made from compressed bamboo (called bamboo scrimber) could work as well as traditional steel bolts or wooden pegs for joining wood and bamboo pieces in construction. They ran physical tests, computer simulations, and trained machine learning models to predict how strong these joints would be, and found the bamboo dowels performed well, with the dowel's thickness being the single biggest factor in how much weight a joint could hold. This matters because bamboo grows back much faster than trees, making it a promising lower-carbon building material.
Key Findings
Support vector regression machine learning models predicted connection strength with R2 values above 0.98, outperforming existing design formulae from codes like Eurocode 5 and NDS
Dowel diameter was identified as the most critical factor in connection performance, followed by embedment strength and material density
Finite element models validated against full-scale double-shear connection tests accurately predicted load-displacement behavior and failure modes
chevron_right Technical Summary
Engineers tested bamboo dowels as a sustainable alternative to steel bolts and timber dowels for connecting wood and bamboo building components, finding that machine learning models predict connection strength more accurately than current building codes.

Bamboos are a diverse group of mostly evergreen perennial flowering plants making up the subfamily Bambusoideae of the grass family Poaceae. Giant bamboos are the largest members of the grass family, in the case of Dendrocalamus sinicus having individual stalks (culms) reaching a length of 46 met...
