Pecan truffle abundance swings wildly even within one orchard

Mycorrhizal Networks

If you're growing pecans or hunting truffles, tree age and local soil conditions in just one corner of an orchard can mean the difference between a truffle jackpot and nothing at all.

Pecan truffles are an underground fungus that farmers love finding near their pecan trees, but nobody fully understands why some spots produce tons of them and others produce none. Researchers tested soil from five different sections of one orchard and found the youngest trees, just 4 years old, had far more truffle DNA than older 9-year-old trees in another part of the same orchard. One section had almost no truffle present at all, showing that truffle growth can be oddly patchy even in a single, well-managed orchard.

Key Findings

1

Truffle DNA abundance ranged from near-zero (3.60 × 10⁻¹ ng/g) in one section of 9-year-old trees to 1.95 × 10⁴ ng/g in the 4-year-old section, and was completely absent at an outlier site

2

Tuber lyonii made up 92.2% of all Tuber fungal sequences detected, with soil fungal communities otherwise dominated by Mortierellomycota, Ascomycota, and Basidiomycota

3

Soil pH and organic matter were consistent across the orchard, but cation exchange capacity was significantly lower in the high-truffle young-tree section than in the older sections

chevron_right Technical Summary

Pecan truffles, a prized edible fungus that grows underground near pecan tree roots, don't spread evenly through an orchard. A new study found truffle DNA levels varied by over 50,000-fold between different sections of the same orchard, with younger trees surprisingly hosting the most truffle growth.
