A leafcutting bee shows promise as a sunflower pollinator

Pollinators
If you grow sunflowers or any Asteraceae-family plants in your garden, the pollinator working your blooms might someday be a leased leafcutting bee instead of a honeybee, and understanding its needs now shapes how growers manage bee diversity later.
Sunflowers need help from bees to produce seeds, especially hybrid varieties grown for farming. Scientists are studying a wild bee called the sunflower leafcutting bee because it's really good at pollinating sunflowers and can be raised in artificial nests, stored, and released right when the flowers bloom. But before farmers can rely on it the way they do honeybees, researchers need to figure out how to keep it alive through temperature swings and handle its nests without damaging the bees inside.
Key Findings
Megachile pugnata is an efficient sunflower pollinator that accepts artificial nests and can be stored and released on a schedule timed to bloom.
Temperature extremes during emergence, nesting, overwintering, and post-diapause periods can cause significant population losses, and this needs further study.
Unlike related managed bees, M. pugnata cells are protected only by a cocoon without a leaf-lined envelope, raising unresolved questions about whether nests can be mechanically processed at scale.
chevron_right Technical Summary
A wild bee species could become a commercial sunflower pollinator alongside honeybees, but researchers still need to solve problems with temperature control, nest housing, and large-scale handling before it's ready for farm use.

Potential utility and research needs for the sunflower leafcutting bee, Megachile pugnata, as a managed pollinator.
Though cultivated sunflowers have been bred to self-pollinate, the crop still has substantial reliance on pollinators, especially for the production of hybrid seed. In North America, both managed (...
