This gene helps canola seeds survive salty soil

Li O, Zhao J, Wang S, Hou X, Zhang H

Crop Improvement

If you garden near winter-salted roads or in coastal soil, this points to a root-level mechanism that could eventually breed sturdier salt-tolerant crop varieties for marginal land.

Rapeseed, the plant canola oil comes from, can handle salty soil better than many crops, but scientists didn't know why. They discovered that salt exposure changes the plant's internal hormone signals, especially auxin, which controls root shape, and they pinpointed one gene called BnSAUR12 that seeds need to germinate well under salty conditions. When that gene was knocked out, the seeds struggled more in salt.

Key Findings

1

Salt stress inhibited hypocotyl elongation and lateral root development while promoting primary root elongation in Brassica napus.

2

Genome-wide analysis identified 225 BnSAUR genes in the Brassica napus genome, with multiple showing salt-responsive expression confirmed by qPCR.

3

Loss of BnSAUR12 function reduced salt tolerance during seed germination, identifying it as a functional candidate gene for stress resilience.

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists found that salt stress reshapes rapeseed root growth by boosting a hormone called auxin, and identified a specific gene, BnSAUR12, that helps seeds tolerate salty soil when it works properly.

Salt stress responses of Brassica napus roots and functional characterization of BnSAUR12 in salt tolerance.

Salt stress severely limits crop productivity by affecting plant growth and development. Rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) shows considerable adaptability to saline environments; however, the molecular ...
