Plants fight heat stress using their DNA repair toolkit

Climate Adaptation
The tomatoes wilting in a July garden and the DNA-damage alarm system inside their cells are more connected than they look, and understanding that link could lead to crop varieties that shrug off heat waves instead of shutting down.
Plants have a built-in system for noticing and fixing damaged DNA, kind of like a cellular repair crew. Researchers found that this same repair crew also kicks in when plants get too hot, helping them cope with heat stress by pausing growth and protecting their genetic material. Learning how these repair signals and heat survival are linked could help scientists breed crops that hold up better as temperatures climb.
Key Findings
A protein called SOG1, central to the plant DNA damage response, also regulates downstream genes activated during heat stress
A SOG1-independent pathway involving HOS1 and RECQ2 proteins provides an additional route linking DNA damage signaling to heat tolerance
The plant DREAM complex has emerged as a newly identified link connecting genome stability maintenance with heat stress responses
chevron_right Technical Summary
Scientists are discovering that plants use the same molecular machinery for repairing DNA damage to survive dangerous heat waves, suggesting new ways to breed crops that can withstand a warming climate.
