Seed formation varies more across crops than scientists assumed

Crispr

The seed packet you tear open each spring holds a plant that built itself from a single fertilized cell using a developmental playbook that turns out to differ crop by crop, which is exactly the kind of detail breeders need to make seeds germinate faster or more reliably.

When a plant's egg and sperm cell combine, that single cell has to figure out which end becomes the root and which becomes the shoot, then pack itself with nutrients to survive as a dormant seed. Researchers compared this process across many plant species and found that the rules discovered in the classic lab plant mustard-weed (Arabidopsis) don't fully apply elsewhere. They argue this means scientists need new tools, like tracking individual cells and using gene-editing, to actually control seed development in food crops.

Key Findings

1

New single-cell and 3D imaging technologies reveal major differences in early embryo cell division patterns across flowering plant species, not just in Arabidopsis.

2

Auxin hormone transport (via PIN-FORMED proteins) and WOX-family genes consistently help establish the embryo's root-shoot axis across lineages, marking them as conserved tools for crop engineering.

3

The review separates seed maturation from dormancy and germination as distinct, separately controllable stages, highlighting CRISPR activation and synthetic apomixis as emerging engineering strategies.

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists reviewed how plant embryos form, from the first cell divisions after fertilization to the final seed, and found that much of what we thought we knew from the lab plant Arabidopsis doesn't hold true across other crops. This matters because it points to new ways to engineer better seeds in staple crops like wheat, corn, and rice.
