Crispr

Danshen root extract shows up in heart and circulation remedies across Asia, and faster gene-editing tools mean breeders can tweak its medicinal compounds without years of lab delays.

Salvia miltiorrhiza, known as Danshen or red sage root, is a popular medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine for heart health. Editing its genes to study or improve it has been slow because most methods require growing new plants from tissue culture, which takes a long time. This new technique, called hypocotyl acupuncture, pokes tiny wounds into young seedling stems to introduce genetic changes directly, making the whole process much quicker and easier for researchers.

Key Findings

1

The method wounds the hypocotyl (seedling stem) with a needle-like tool to deliver transformation constructs, avoiding lengthy tissue culture and regeneration steps

2

The protocol works for both standard genetic transformation and CRISPR-based genome editing in Salvia miltiorrhiza

3

The approach is described as efficient and practical, suggesting it could be adopted widely for research on this medicinal species

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists developed a faster, simpler way to genetically modify Danshen (a widely used medicinal plant) by pricking seedling stems with a needle to deliver DNA, skipping the slow tissue-culture steps that usually bottleneck plant gene editing.
