Plant cells reroute energy between organelles to survive drought or flood

Ateeq M, Yun P, Ashraf MA, Shabala S, Liu J

Plant Signaling

The tomato plant wilting in your garden during a heat wave isn't dying quietly; its cells are actively shuffling energy between internal organelles to keep surviving, and scientists figuring out that signaling could lead to tougher garden and crop varieties.

Inside every plant cell, two tiny structures, chloroplasts (which capture sunlight) and mitochondria (which make energy), constantly send chemical messages to each other. When a plant gets too much or too little water, these two structures renegotiate how to spend the plant's limited energy, favoring survival over growth. Researchers think if we understand this conversation better, we could help crops cope with droughts and floods without losing as much yield.

Key Findings

1

Chloroplasts and mitochondria coordinate metabolic reorganization during both drought and flooding stress, shifting resources from growth to stress acclimation

2

A sugar-and-energy sensing network (Tre6P-SnRK1-TOR) acts as the central hub interpreting carbon and energy status to drive these stress responses

3

New tools like organelle-specific metabolomics and synthetic biology are opening paths to deliberately engineer this chloroplast-mitochondria crosstalk for crop resilience

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists are mapping how plant cells' two power plants, chloroplasts and mitochondria, talk to each other and reroute energy when a plant faces drought or flooding, instead of just shutting down. Understanding this internal communication could help breeders engineer crops that handle extreme weather while still growing well.

Topic
thermostat

Climate adaptation in plants refers to the physiological and evolutionary mechanisms through which plants adjust to changing environmental conditions, including temperature shifts, altered precipitation patterns, and seasonal variations. Understanding these processes is essential for plant science
