Five new root bacteria genomes mapped from poplar trees

Beals DG, Crockett Z, Phan DA, Nguyen A, Schadt CW

Soil Health

The microbes clinging to a poplar's roots help the tree pull nutrients from soil and resist stress, and these newly cataloged genomes give researchers better tools to figure out which bacteria actually help plants thrive.

Researchers collected bacteria living on the roots of cottonwood and poplar trees in Tennessee and Oregon, then read out their complete genetic codes. These particular bacteria types were poorly documented before, so this gives scientists a much better reference library for studying how trees and their root-dwelling microbes work together.

Key Findings

1

Five bacterial genomes were sequenced from isolates collected on Populus deltoides and Populus trichocarpa roots

2

Samples were gathered from field sites in Tennessee and Oregon

3

The isolates represent bacterial genera that were previously underrepresented in Populus root microbiome databases

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists sequenced the full genomes of five bacteria living on the roots of cottonwood and poplar trees, filling in gaps in our understanding of the microbial communities these trees depend on.

Populus deltoides

Populus deltoides, the eastern cottonwood or necklace poplar, is a species of cottonwood poplar native to North America, growing throughout the eastern, central, and southwestern United States as well as the southern Canadian prairies, the southernmost part of eastern Canada, and northeastern Mexico.
