AI model predicts how well sunflowers clean toxic soil

Phytoremediation
If you've ever seen sunflowers planted around a former industrial lot or community garden cleanup, this is the science behind why that works and when it doesn't.
Sunflowers are good at soaking up heavy metals like cadmium and lead from dirty soil, a trick called phytoremediation. Researchers fed data on soil chemistry and sunflower biology into a computer model that can now predict how much metal a sunflower will actually absorb, and found that the dirtier the soil gets, the less efficient each plant becomes at pulling metal out. That prediction tool could help people planning soil cleanups pick the right conditions and expectations before planting a single seed.
Key Findings
A categorical boosting machine learning model predicted sunflower heavy metal uptake (bioconcentration factor) with a test-set R² of 0.60
Soil heavy metal concentration, which part of the sunflower is measured, and the metal's electronegativity were the top predictors of uptake
Bioconcentration factor decreases as soil heavy metal concentration increases, and soil properties act as a mediating factor alongside direct metal effects
chevron_right Technical Summary
Scientists built a machine-learning model that predicts how much heavy metal sunflowers will pull out of contaminated soil, making it easier to plan cleanup projects without costly trial and error.
