Soil bacteria boost ryegrass growth in the lab, not the field

Soil Health

If you've ever added a biostimulant or microbial inoculant to your garden soil and wondered whether it actually works, this study is a reality check: the same bacteria that supercharged growth in pots barely moved the needle once planted outdoors.

Researchers tested a bacteria-based soil booster called Biomex starter, containing Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, on a common forage grass called Italian ryegrass. In greenhouse-style trials the bacteria helped roots and shoots grow bigger and take up more phosphorus, especially in certain grass varieties. But when the same treatment was tried on real farmland over several years, those benefits mostly disappeared, showing that what works in a controlled pot doesn't always translate to the messier conditions of an actual field.

Key Findings

1

The biostimulant Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42 was validated via MALDI-TOF MS and 16S rRNA identification and shown to tolerate stresses like heat, salinity, drought, and pH shifts

2

In phosphorus-deficient mesocosm trials, the bacteria applied with water carrier plus standard fertiliser increased shoot and root biomass, chlorophyll content, and phosphorus uptake, especially in tetraploid cultivars

3

In a third-year field trial under Northern Irish conditions, Italian ryegrass kept high yields and nutrient content, but the lab/mesocosm growth benefits did not consistently translate into field yield improvements

chevron_right Technical Summary

A PhD thesis tested a commercial bacterial biostimulant on Italian ryegrass, finding it boosted growth and nutrient uptake in controlled lab and mesocosm settings, but those gains did not reliably show up as higher yields in real field trials under Northern Irish conditions.
