Scientists can now reverse-engineer a hybrid plant's parents

Patel MK, Meena VK, Kumar S, Kumar P, Chand S

Crop Improvement

The tomato variety or apple cultivar you love but can't reliably grow from seed exists because breeders can't easily trace its exact parent lines, and this technique could change that.

Imagine you have an amazing plant, like a super sweet, disease-resistant tomato, but you don't know exactly which two parent plants were crossed to make it. Reverse breeding is a clever trick where scientists block the normal shuffling of chromosomes that happens during reproduction, which lets them work backward to recreate the original parent plants. Once you have those parents, you can breed the exact same hybrid again and again, instead of getting unpredictable results every time.

Key Findings

1

Reverse breeding works by suppressing meiotic crossover (chromosome shuffling) during meiosis-I to prevent genetic recombination in a desired heterozygous plant.

2

Success depends heavily on doubled haploid (DH) technology, which converts haploid gametes into stable diploid plants through diploidization.

3

The technique allows breeders to identify and fix homozygous parental lines so a valuable hybrid can be reliably reconstructed for traits like disease resistance, climate resilience, and nutritional quality.

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists are refining a breeding method called reverse breeding that lets them figure out the exact parent plants needed to recreate a prized hybrid, by blocking chromosome shuffling during reproduction. This could speed up breeding crops with better disease resistance, climate toughness, and nutrition.
