Resistant bananas recruit bodyguard bacteria to fight deadly fungus

Zhang W, Xu S, Yu H, Wang YY, Liu J

Soil Health

If you grow bananas, houseplants, or anything in containers, this shows that healthy soil microbes, not just pesticides, can be the difference between a thriving plant and a dead one.

When a fungus that causes Fusarium wilt attacks a resistant banana variety, the plant's roots send out a chemical signal that attracts protective bacteria living in the soil. Scientists took soil from these resistant plants, loaded with a helpful bacteria group called Bacillus, and added it to susceptible banana plants, cutting their disease severity by over 90%. It turns out the plant's own root chemistry, specifically a sugar called D-sorbitol, helps build this protective microbial shield.

Key Findings

1

Rhizosphere soil from resistant cultivar GCTCV119 was the only donor treatment that significantly reduced disease index in susceptible banana plants after pathogen challenge.

2

A synthetic community of seven Bacillus strains from GCTCV119 roots reduced disease index by 90.20% by inducing plant resistance.

3

Pathogen infection triggered D-sorbitol accumulation in GCTCV119 roots, which increased total bacterial and Bacillus abundance in soil and lowered disease severity.

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists found that disease-resistant banana plants call in helpful soil bacteria, especially Bacillus, when attacked by a deadly fungus, and transplanting those bacteria into vulnerable banana plants cut disease severity by over 90%.

Banana

A banana is an elongated, edible fruit—botanically a berry—produced by several kinds of large treelike herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. In some countries, cooking bananas are called plantains, distinguishing them from dessert bananas. The fruit is variable in size, color and firmnes...
