Chicken gene-editing tool now targets sex chromosomes directly

If you're here for plants, this one's a miss: it's poultry genetics research, not something that touches your garden, your houseplants, or the woods you walk through.

Researchers found a way to insert a gene-editing tool called Cas9 directly into the sex-determining chromosomes of chicken reproductive cells, so the tool only activates in male or female birds depending on which chromosome it's attached to. They confirmed the edited cells still worked normally as germ cells, meaning the birds could still pass on traits normally. This has applications in poultry breeding and research, not in plant science.

Key Findings

1

Cas9-GFP constructs were successfully integrated into both the Z chromosome (DMRT1-DMRT3 region) and W chromosome (HINTW locus) in chicken primordial germ cells

2

Integrated Cas9 remained functional, achieving efficient gene cleavage at NHEJ1 loci and causing loss of GFP fluorescence when targeting the GFP gene itself

3

Knock-in germ cells retained normal germ cell markers and migration ability, showing the sex-linked insertion did not disrupt germline identity

chevron_right Technical Summary

Scientists built a tool that inserts a gene-editing enzyme directly onto the sex chromosomes of chicken reproductive cells, letting researchers control genetic changes based on whether an embryo is male or female. This is animal biotechnology research with no direct connection to plants.

Sex chromosome-targeted Cas9 knock-in and functional validation in chicken primordial germ cells.

Sex-specific control of genome editing remains a significant challenge in birds. Chickens exhibit a ZW sex-determination system in which the Z and W chromosomes encode genes essential for sex diffe...
