Tiny AI model spots bean leaf diseases from phone-ready photos
Plant Disease Detection
A photo of a spotted bean leaf in your garden could soon get a quick disease diagnosis from a phone app, without a lab visit or a trip to the extension office.
Scientists trained a small computer program to look at photos of bean leaves and tell whether they're healthy or diseased. It's small enough to run on a phone, and it got the right answer about 94 times out of 100. A bigger version of the same idea reached over 99% on a standard set of bean leaf photos.
Key Findings
The hybrid CNN-LSTM model reached 94.36% accuracy and a 94.38% F1 score at only 1.86 MB, about 70% smaller than traditional CNN-based systems.
EfficientNet-B7 combined with an LSTM layer reached a state-of-the-art F1 score of 99.22% on the ibean dataset.
Tailored image augmentation strategies outperformed generic combinations of transformations at preserving diagnostic leaf patterns.
chevron_right Technical Summary
Researchers built a compact AI model that identifies bean leaf diseases from photos with about 94% accuracy while taking up just 1.86 MB, roughly 70% smaller than typical models. That small size means it could run on a basic phone or handheld device in the field, where internet access and computing power are limited.
