Bacteria from factory wastewater shield fish from lead pollution damage

Zafar S, Ashraf A, Fatima S, Asad F, Ahmad K

Bioremediation

Lead that washes into ponds and streams near your garden can end up in irrigation water and soil, so microbes that lock it away point toward cheaper cleanup for the waterways and wetland plantings you rely on.

Scientists found a bacterium living in factory wastewater that can survive high levels of lead and other metals. When they added it to tanks with lead-contaminated water, the fish living there lived longer, grew better and had healthier organs than fish without it. The microbe soaks up lead into its cells, which may make the metal less available to living things in the water.

Key Findings

1

Acinetobacter sp. PbS1A2 tolerated lead at up to 30 mM and resisted several other heavy metals.

2

Lead exposure raised antioxidant enzyme activity, with glutathione transferase up 795%, peroxidase up 229%, and superoxide dismutase up 195%.

3

Over 30 days, fish given the bacterium plus 1 mg/L lead had higher survival, better growth, improved digestive enzyme activity, and less blood and tissue damage than fish given lead alone.

chevron_right Technical Summary

A lead-tolerant bacterium pulled from industrial wastewater protected rohu fish from lead poisoning in a 30-day trial. Treated fish survived better, grew faster and showed less organ damage, pointing to a cheap biological way to clean up metal-polluted water.
