New cotton hybrids finally combine high yield with soft fibers

The cotton in your t-shirt has long forced farmers to choose between a bigger harvest or softer, stronger fibers, and this research shows breeders how to get both from the same plant.

Cotton breeders usually face a frustrating trade-off: varieties bred for huge harvests tend to produce coarser, weaker fibers, and vice versa. This study grew eight new cotton hybrids alongside standard varieties and measured 16 different traits, from boll size to fiber strength. Two hybrids stood out: one that maximizes yield without sacrificing quality, and another with exceptional fiber softness and strength, giving breeders a genetic roadmap for building better cotton plants.
