Plants build their stems and wood from a tough, glue-like material called lignin, which is hard for most organisms to break apart. Laccase is a natural enzyme, made mostly by fungi, that chips away at this material so the plant's sugars underneath become accessible. Scientists study laccase because it could make it cheaper and cleaner to turn crop waste, wood chips, and other plant leftovers into biofuel, paper, or compost.
