Recycling farm waste boosts income most for struggling rural households

If you compost kitchen scraps or reuse garden waste as mulch, this study shows that same closed-loop thinking scaled up to a farm can meaningfully lift a family's income, especially for those starting from the least.

Researchers looked at Chinese farming families who practice circular agriculture, meaning they recycle manure, crop residue, and other waste back into their farming system instead of buying new inputs or throwing things away. Households doing this earned noticeably more than similar households that didn't, largely because they saved money on supplies and found new ways to earn income. Interestingly, the families who started out poorest benefited the most, suggesting this approach could help narrow the income gap in rural communities.
