Sewage sludge plus friendly bacteria helps oak trees thrive safely

The compost or soil amendment you spread in your garden could one day come from treated wastewater sludge, and this research shows that approach can boost plant growth without creating a hidden antibiotic-resistance problem.
Researchers took leftover sludge from sewage treatment plants and used it to help restore damaged soil in Spain, growing holm oak trees (a common Mediterranean tree) in it. When they added specific helpful bacteria to the sludge, the trees grew noticeably better and handled stress more easily, and importantly, this didn't cause a spike in antibiotic-resistant bacteria in the soil.

Supplementing sludge with plant growth-promoting bacteria (Bacillus pretiosus and Pseudomonas agronomica) further boosted nutrient uptake and stress tolerance
PGPB-inoculated treatments showed high microbial diversity and did not cause a generalized increase in phenotypic antibiotic resistance
