Tangled vines and forest health quietly narrow a marsupial's diet

The vine-choked understory that looks 'wild' and lush in a neglected woodlot can actually signal degraded habitat, and this study shows that kind of overgrowth measurably squeezes what wildlife can eat and where they can find food.

Scientists tracked a small opossum living in patches of dry forest in Brazil and used chemical signatures in its hair to figure out what it had been eating. They found that opossums in bigger, healthier forest patches ate a much wider variety of foods, while those in patches overrun with vines or where termites were being heavily eaten all ended up eating pretty much the same narrow diet. It's a reminder that the tangled understory of a forest patch, not just its size on a map, shapes how well it can support wildlife.
