Biochar plus compost combo cuts lead uptake in mustard greens

If you're growing greens in a raised bed near an old road, driveway, or painted structure where lead can linger in soil, this shows that working compost and biochar into the ground can measurably cut how much lead the plants actually pull up.
Lead in soil is bad news for plants and for anyone eating what grows in it, stunting growth and messing with the plant's internal chemistry. Researchers found that mixing biochar (charred plant material) and compost into lead-tainted soil together worked better than either one alone, helping mustard greens grow taller, produce more seeds, and pull less lead into their tissues. The plants also ramped up their own antioxidant defenses, essentially fighting off the stress from the inside while the soil amendments locked up the lead outside.
