Acid rain turns sludge-borne cadmium into a hidden soil hazard

If you garden or forage near land treated with biosolids, acid rain can quietly convert cadmium from a chemically locked, harmless form into one that plants and soil critters can actually absorb, even when the total metal reading looks perfectly safe.
Sewage sludge is sometimes spread on forest soil as a fertilizer because it's rich in nutrients, but it also carries trace heavy metals. Scientists found that acid rain doesn't just wash these metals away; it chemically changes cadmium so it shifts from a stable, harmless form locked in soil particles into a loose, bioavailable form that plants can take up. The scary part is that standard soil tests that only measure total metal content completely miss this shift, so a soil could pass a safety check while still posing a real risk to roots and soil life.
Key Findings
Cadmium had the highest relative mobilization potential of five metals tested (Cu, Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd), with 6.8% of its initial inventory leaching out under realistic pH 4.0 acid rain conditions.
In the top 20 cm of soil, acid rain shifted cadmium from a stable 'residual' chemical form into acid-soluble, more bioavailable forms, raising its risk classification from low to medium-high even though total cadmium stayed below regulatory limits.
Standard total-concentration risk assessments underestimated actual bioavailable-fraction risk by 2-4 fold compared to speciation-based (chemical form) risk assessment.
