Common roadside weeds could help clean up toxic soil

The scrappy weeds growing in vacant lots and along industrial fence lines, the ones most people pull without a second thought, may hold the key to pulling toxic metals out of contaminated ground.
Scientists looked at four common wild plants growing near polluted industrial sites and tested how they handled heavy metals like lead and copper in the soil. Two of them, a milkweed relative called swallow-wort and a weedy plant called nettleleaf goosefoot, handled the toxic buildup best: one loaded up on protective compounds to survive, while the other kept its genetic material stable even under heavy contamination. That makes both strong candidates for planting on contaminated land to help draw out the pollution naturally.
