Tiny stingless bees make chili pepper plants more productive

Layek U, Bhandari T, Maji J, Karmakar P

Pollinators

If you grow peppers on a balcony or in a backyard bed, the tiny native bees buzzing around the flowers are doing more work than the flowers' own self-pollinating design gives them credit for.

Chili pepper flowers can pollinate themselves, but that doesn't mean they don't benefit from help. Scientists watched which bees, wasps, and butterflies visited chili flowers in India and found that several wild bee species were the most effective visitors. When they brought in managed hives of a small stingless bee species, the pepper plants produced more fruit and better-quality fruit than plants left to pollinate on their own.

Key Findings

1

Key floral visitors identified included the bees Lasioglossum cavernifrons, Nomia (Hoplonomia) elliotii, Nomia strigata, and the stingless bee Tetragonula pagdeni, alongside honeybees, solitary bees, butterflies, and wasps

2

Chili pepper showed high dependence on pollinators for yield despite being a self-compatible crop

3

Managed pollination by Tetragonula pagdeni stingless bees significantly increased both the quantity and quality of chili pepper yield

chevron_right Technical Summary

Researchers in West Bengal, India identified the wild bees and insects that pollinate chili pepper flowers, and found that adding managed stingless bees to chili crops boosted both the amount and quality of fruit produced.

Flower visitors of chili pepper (Capsicum frutescens L.) in West Bengal and assessing yield enhancement by stingless bee (Tetragonula pagdeni Schwarz) pollination.

Amid growing concerns over the decline of pollinator populations, understanding the diversity of pollinators is essential for optimising crop yields. The wild pollinators of chili pepper (Capsicum ...

Chili pepper

Chili peppers, also spelled chile or chilli, are varieties of berry-fruit plants from the genus Capsicum, which are members of the nightshade family Solanaceae, cultivated for their pungency. They are used as a spice to add pungency in many cuisines. Capsaicin and the related capsaicinoids give c...
