Chlorine disinfection step can make treated wastewater chemicals riskier

The water that eventually reaches your garden hose, local stream, or irrigation source has passed through exactly this kind of treatment train, so knowing which step helps or hurts water quality matters if you use municipal water on edible plants.

Researchers followed water through every stage of a real wastewater treatment plant and used chemical fingerprinting to see how pollutants changed shape and toxicity along the way. They found that biological treatment (using bacteria to break things down) mostly made chemicals less harmful, but the last step, chlorine disinfection, sometimes made a small portion of chemicals more toxic through reactions like methylation and alkylation. Most compounds in the treated water ended up with low or no predicted toxicity overall.
