Bitter gourd plant compound curbs lung scarring in mice

The intensely bitter compound that makes bitter melon and wild cucumber vines unpalatable to browsing animals turns out to calm the exact immune signaling that drives scar tissue in damaged lungs.

Cucurbitacin B is a bitter-tasting compound made by plants in the cucumber and cabbage families, including bitter melon, as a natural defense chemical. Researchers gave it to mice with a drug-induced lung injury and found it blocked certain immune cells from flipping into a mode that lays down scar tissue, which kept the lungs healthier. It works by switching off a specific internal signal (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) that those immune cells need to make that switch.
