Your shoe dust reveals how far plant microbes actually travel

The soil microbes clinging to your boots after a walk through the garden or park carry a signature of nearby plant life, and this study shows bacteria reflect what's growing right at your feet while fungi reflect the whole neighborhood's greenery.
Scientists in Finland had people walk the same routes repeatedly and then swabbed the dust off their shoe soles to see what microbes hitched a ride. They found this simple method works reliably, and it revealed something surprising: bacteria on your shoes match the plants immediately around the path, while fungi match the vegetation across a much bigger area, sometimes up to a kilometer away. That's a clue that bacteria and fungi spread through the environment in very different ways.
Key Findings
Left and right shoe dust from the same walk matched each other more closely than dust from different walks or routes, confirming the method is reproducible.
Bacterial diversity was best predicted by vegetation greenness (NDVI) immediately surrounding the walking path.
Fungal community diversity responded to landscape-scale greenness measured at 100 meters to 1 kilometer, and NDVI outperformed simple rural/urban or substrate classifications for both groups.
